Tim’s Take: Sensory deprivation is a strategic nervous system reset. Cameron enters Beyond Rest Melbourne to evaluate whether the entire journey, from street to stillness to re-entry, truly protects recovery.
The lyrics to the 2007 Powderfinger song ‘I Don’t Remember’ serve as a good summary of my experience at Beyond Rest.
On Tuesday, 3 February, 2026, I visited the Collingwood location of the float therapy and sensory deprivation provider.
While vibes at the address are perhaps inconsistent with the grunge of surrounding industrial buildings and a hardware store, once you see the front garden beckoning you in, you begin to transition to the mood required to make the most of a one-hour float session – which is what I experienced.
Who it’s for
Float therapy is for anyone who will be comfortable laying in an egg-shaped floatation tank for an hour or so.
Beyond Rest addresses potential claustrophobia concerns in a blog post on its website.
When to go?
Customer testimonials on Beyond Rest’s website provide some tips about who it’s for and when to book a session.
Paul says he goes on a Monday after a weekend of physical activities such as playing sport. As a contrast, Australian Rules footballer Josh J Kennedy says he floated before every game for seven years.
It’s really about what you want to get out of the session. Every person has a different schedule and Beyond Rest’s convenient online booking calendar means you can choose a day and time that works for you.
A float in the morning may help set the agenda for the rest of your day, for example, while a lunchtime float can create a pause in a busy day, or a float at the end of the day may give you a chance to reflect and recharge for the next day.
Float therapy is just one of the treatments that Beyond Rest offers. Others include contrast fire and ice therapy, an infrared sauna, red light therapy, and hyperthermic ozone and carbonic acid transdermal technology (HOCATT).
Judging by how I experienced the float, it seems likely that these other treatments are presented with similarly high quality.
Everything about Beyond Rest’s facilities speak to the high level of care that has been invested. The room with the float pod includes a shower to rinse before and after your session.
Also included are things I wouldn’t have thought to include, such as earbuds, and Vaseline to spray over any open cuts that the salt water will get into – a small cut on one of my toes very quickly reminded me of its existence, although it is true as the receptionist on the day said that you will gradually get used to that sensation. Mucking around and finding out…..
Once you are inside the pod, gentle music plays to transition you into the experience. There are places to hold your hand, buttons for light and to call for help (which has only been used once, by accident, my guide told me) and a neck rest is included, although I found this not as necessary. What was necessary, however, was a spray bottle with fresh water in case the salt water gets in your eyes.
For the rest of the session, it is fair to say that I was more restless than restful. I hoped to use the opportunity as an experience to reflect and, yes, to sleep ‘perchance to dream’, but as a first-timer I was too busy taking everything in.
On Beyond Rest’s website and in other marketing collateral, it’s emphasised that people will need more than one session to gain the full benefits of float therapy.
While that could be dismissed as a way to drive repeat bookings, I could see the merit after my session – which ended with the same gentle music to transition out, similar to what awards nights do when they want to ‘transition out’ an award recipient who is making an overlong speech.
Once I showered and dried, I followed a path to a lounge area with complementary tea and reading material. Alas, the outside world beckoned me too quickly, but as I collected my shoes from the entrance, I thought how remarkably simple the entire experience was.
I was guided by one of Beyond Rest’s staff members, Ellie, who was incredibly helpful, and I enjoyed learning about her own experience with float therapy. She told me she has worked at Beyond Rest since the end of 2021 and she has floated weekly since then (‘minus time travelling’).
Crowding/etiquette
Since all facilities are conveniently provided in the float room, you are free to follow etiquette that suits you, although the lounge area should be for quiet contemplation rather than socialising.
I didn’t have any issues with crowding either before or after my session.
Booking tips
Once you have booked your session through the online calendar, confirmation and then a reminder are sent to your email, specifying that you don’t need to bring anything apart from yourself because of all the wonderful things that are provided.
In saying that, the emails do flag that you should avoid coffee, eating and shaving/waxing ahead of the session. Ellie says this is ‘to optimise the relaxation on the day’, particularly during your first time when ‘it’s easy to fixate on small discomforts’.
Pricing tips and overall value
The 60-minute float session I experienced costs $89. In terms of overall value, I think it’s clear the benefits are likely to accumulate over time in a way that’s different to, say, a sports massage designed to alleviate specific pain or soreness.
While space travel becomes increasingly in vogue, it seems unlikely that I will ever experience it. A float session at Beyond Rest is probably the next best option for those of us wanting to immerse ourselves in the benefits of the sensation (ºif not reality) of zero gravity.
